Rhode Island Field Herping Places!!!
I need to know if there are any good places in RI, CT, or MA to go field herping. I want to go maybe before it gets too cold here or sometime next year if they don't tear the place down to build something dumb. Anyway, if do go field herping...I'd only expect to find garter snakes if anything......But they are still cool. What other reptiles live in the southern new england area?

Hello,
There are various frogs and salamanders in abbundance. Garter snakes are what you will most likely find in the snake category but depending upon where you are looking, you can also encounter water snake species as well.
Just about any wooded area poses the potential for snake findings. Fields of all sorts are popular as well.
If you like to travel, a small town called "Turners falls" is a decent place to check out. Their is a valley of rocks directly under the bridge leading into the town. (Its down rt 2) That is a great place to locate water snakes and garters as the rocks lead to the surrounding wooded area that is also inhabited with open field areas.
I haven't been there in a couple years, but last time I was there, I had several encounters with garters. (No water snakes on my last visit.)
Its also a great spot for catching Walleye and trout if you enjoy fishing.

Turners Falls is in Western Mass, over near Greenfield. I do believe that if you go into the mountains, such as Mt Monadnock, in Jaffrey NH, you may see a rattle snake. Other than that Garters, Salamanders, Frogs, and and occasional Turtle (Box, Snappers, Painters). You may also find a Garden Spider (Large Yellow body with Black markings).

Hello,
Look up Turners Falls on the net and you can get some exact directions. You can also walk the Mohawk Trail. Most of the Mohawk trail is through the woods, so if you toss some logs, you have a good chance at seeing some critters.

Just make sure you put the logs back in the original position. You may be lifting the roof off of something's home!
