Anyone know what kind of frog this is? Frogs like this started hanging around our yard last spring....they have pointy noses, and this one was in a little bit of collected rainwater in our backyard this morning, so I snapped his picture....he's got to be a water frog because he has webbed feet, but we don't have any kind of pond or creek or anything near our house, so I'm puzzled as to why they'd be living here:

Juliane I am going to guess some type of Southern Leopard Frog, its hard for ME to tell with it being in the water...But I'm sure our species specialists Matt (furryscaly) and Ken can identified it better.

That's a southern leopard frog (Rana utricularia). Main physical difference they have from northerns is their snouts are often pointier, and they usually have a white spot in the middle of the tympanum (ear drum). Plus, in your case, they're the only leopard frog native to FL. Leopard frogs are aquatic, but can still found miles from water.

Leopard frogs are extremely variable in color, pattern, and even size. The white tympanum spot, though usually there, can be absent in southern Leopard Geckos. Spots may be large, small, few, many, or completely absent in rare cases. Spots can be dark brown, black, or on some green frogs, darker green spots. Body color can be various shades of brown, grey-brown, tan, gold, and green, or combinations of these colors. Most southern Leopard Geckos tend to be the same color brown as the one you found though.

definately a southern leopard frog, used to see them here until the drought killed the population here in southern New Mexico
