On 24 April 2005, Rob Acuff (Overland Park) and Dan Murrow (Olathe), conducted a Herp Count in Johnson County within the city limits of Olathe, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Temp was about 59F and dropping. Methods included rock and debris turning, and visual observation.

We found the following:

2 Northern Cricket Frog (Acris crepitans)
1 Great Plains Skink (Eumeces obsoletus)
1 Eastern Racer (Coluber constrictor)
1 Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum)
1 Common Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis)
19 Ringneck Snake (Diadophis punctatus)
2 Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)
1 Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus)

Wow, sounds like you had an exciting search,. any pics of those you found?

Do those numbers reflect good/bad populations to you? - was that the purpose of the study?

Im no scientist. I report my findings to the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, and they decide what it means.

Personally I think it is amazing to find Timber Rattlesnakes within the city limits of a city this size. I imagine it is because this area has only been massively populated in the last 10 years or so.

I always consider it a good day herping when we find Timbers or Copperheads.
