Not exactly sure what kind of snake this guy is, and unfortunately I didn't get a great body pic, but he was about 15 inches long and brown with orange striping. I found him in a temperate forest in central coastal Oregon.

What a cute little face! The closest I could come up with in the Audubon book is a Northwestern garter, but when I googled that the snakes look very different. Apparently there are several color variations though.

It REALLY looks like the snake listed in the book. The one in the book is a little more defined, but with the variations within the same species...the similarity is pretty strong. The digi pic is also several shades darker then the book pic. The camera automatically adjusted it to a much darker hue.
