Irritated Garter Snake

I didn't go out with the intention to do any "field herping." I just went out to water my wilting blueberry bush (will it ever rain?). I noticed this very impressive eastern garter snake coming out to bask by my front stoop. S/he is a full-grown one, and very good at acting like a dangerous snake! When I tried to take close-up photos, s/he flattened out its head to look like a "hood," and struck at me repeatedly. Being a wuss when it comes to snakes that don't act like kittens, I took my pictures and left the snake alone! Hope it doesn't eat all my toads!

Re: Irritated Garter Snake

Awwwww it wouldn't have hurt you if it did bite you. However it would most likely have musked you and that stuff really stinks!

Rain? Rain? You are welcome to some of ours! We have been in a drought situation for the past couple of years and I guess Mother Nature is trying to play catch up!
I think we have already had more rain this year than we had all of last year!

Great pic. Merlin's right though the musking is worse than the bite. Fortunately, you were able to avoid both! That's cool how he flattened his head out like that... makes him look really dangerous!

Re: Irritated Garter Snake

I always have someone else pick the snake up first under the guise of me wanting to get a picture of them with it...once they get musked i'm free to play with the snake while they try to clean their hands
