Back from the Everglades
Herping in the everglades
We are back and this trip was not very successful ! First off , I got some kind of weird virus just before we hit Miami, so I spent the entire day in the hotel room in bed thinking about jumping off the balcony . My brother and son hit the Parkway, but only saw some cottonmouths and a few garters. I got up at 4:30 am and went out and found several dead cottons and a dead 4 ft Burmese python We went to Deering estates that afternoon but found nothing other than some skins of red tail boas in the trees. Off to Key Biscayne from there where we saw the usual 5 million green and Mexican Iguanas. Also many other types of lizards, big and small. From there we headed home without even giving the Parkway another night. I think late spring April is the best time to start with the night cruising. I should have my knew PC back Tuesday and will be back with some pics.... |

I'm sorry, but I don't know what "Parkway" you are refering to? If you want a good area to look for native herps next time you are here, try Turner River Road. It is out past the Shark River area of Everglades National Park on the Tamiami Trail (US 41). You might also try the Fakahatchee Strand (Janes Senic Drive). The Golden Gate is also a great spot. Remember to take plenty of extra fuel!

Anything released or ...
Escapes ... can breed and multiply in the tropics! You would not believe some of the herps you run across down in southern florida! A large precent of the things you run across are imported to Florida from God knows where! ..... I have a picture of a very large burmese python that tried to swallow a large gator in the Glades but in doing so they both died .....
