Yes, I use to live in San Diego back in the 80's ... Borrego Springs is a little under a 2 hour drive from San Diego but well worth it! Some of the best road hunting I have ever experienced! There is a place called "Scissor's Crossing" (I can't remember the numbers of the road but it is quite obvious looking at a map or once you get there you will figure it out. A great time to go is right around the time the young one's are hatching out of their shells ... I think September - October time frame. We caught and released most of them but we observed lots of gopher snakes, cal kings, shovel noses, pacific rattlesnakes ... we saw one Mama right after she gave birth to a bunch of little rattler's so they were everywhere you looked at that place where we stopped. We even caught and released a beautiful 18 inch rosy boa one night because it was against the law to keep them. there were a few other what my friend that turned me on to Scissors crossing called "garbage snakes" but I enjoyed spotting, stopping and jumping out of the care to see exactly whatever it was crawling across the road! Definitely go on a "dark moon" I guess the reptiles feel more secure or they think they have the advantage hunting prey in the dark. Don't miss an hour before and two hours after sunset! Good Luck and Happy Herping!!!
