Rat and mice food that don't attract flies!?
What dry pelleted foods for mice and rats don't attract fruit flies? I put in some dry pelleted dog formula and the rodents love it, but man the next morning the rat cage is infested with 1000 fruit flies!

never heard of such a thing....some people use dog food without the red dye in it as food. Red dye is poisonous to some reptiles....Maybe the fruit flies are from your igs food...and they think the rat food smells good?? I have never had fruit flies near dry food....interesting...good luck with that....Lyn

Dog food, although appealing to rodents, isnt a healthy diet. You should try for something rodent specific. I used a product called 'lab blocks' with my mice and they loved it, and I never had problems with flies.

Anthony are you putting the food down on the floor of the cage? If so it is likely that the food is getting damp and this is the source of the problem. Since rodents tends to carry food off and stash it it may be getting wet that way as well,
Fruit flies are attracted to damp organinc material. Try putting the food on a wire basket that keeps it up off the floor. The rodents can nibble through the openings in the wire and it will keep your food better and make it last longer. And dog food is not a good food for the rodents. As stated the red dye in some of it is toxic to snakes.
