Do I need to feed the babies?

The first batch of babies are acting like they are trying to clean themselves and chew on things (the aspen bedding). Do I need to give the babies any food? What do I feed them if they will eat anything besides moms milk?
How many weeks old should they be when I try to feed them?
They were born Sept 20...

Can rats eat Coconut?

I have dehydrated coconut and was wondering if the rats could eat it a little bit at a time?

Absolutely. They'll probably love it, though they have individual tastes that vary. Yeah, a little at a time though. It'd be a treat, not a meal

Don't you have a dish of food in there for the mom? When the babies are ready, they'll start to eat solid food, but there should always be food in the cage anyway, so I don't see the problem

Yeah, as Matt pointed out, the babies will begin to eat what the mother eats when they are ready - she will wean them at around 4-5 weeks old, and show them the food that she eats to teach them to eat. They will begin eating solid food and still drinking some of mum's milk, until at around 5 weeks old they just eat solids. By then you need to take the males out otherwise they will mate with the females, and the female babies are not old enough to breed yet.

Yup, I know about separating the males and females

I just wasn't sure if I needed to have the babies on a different kind of food. Should I still feed the moms their veggies and other stuff though? Will the babies get the poopers from too many veggies?

Trust me Furry...My rats eat like kings and queens! lol

Rats are scavengers Jem, they will eat anything. Give them the same food that you feed their mum - we feed commercialised rat food, and various human foods; fruit and veg, bread, meat, cheese, potato, cereal, etc.. don't feed too many fattening foods obviously, but you don't need to do anything differently for the little ones.

Rats can eat practically anything! Never feed males oranges or orange juice. And don't feed too many fatty foods.
