They turn into moths. They live off of bee hive I think. I don't know about how nutritious the wax worms are during their developing stage, because they are supposed to eat wax as pupae, and then make a cocoon out of the wax where they will morph into moths. Without a source of wax, I guess they can't make a full cocoon.
To make them last longer,put them in the refrigerator.Only take out as many as you need for one meal. Then, allow them to come back to life. If you want to hurry the process up you can put them under a lamp or other heat source, but don't cook them. I usually allow the waxies to eat for about a day. Last meal.
