Earthworms, nightcrawlers and geckos
Hi!
A friend recommended that I add earthworms to my gargoyles new enclosure to solve a soil problem I'm having. Wondering if earthworms would be harmful for my geckos if they eat one of them, I've found a few references to nightcrawlers as being safe for feeding to crested and gargoyle geckos. So my linguistic question of the day is "are nightcrawlers the same thing as earthworms" and my herp question of the day is "if they are, would they be safe for my gargoyles"? =) Thanks! =) Ricardo

Hello,
Earthworms and nightcrawlers are similar, but not the same. Nightcrawlers are much larger in size compared to earthworms. I have never heard of them being used with geckos as feeders, but I also have never owned either species you are referring too. To my knowledge, earthworms are nutritional. I don't see why they couldn't be used safely. I would avoid nightcrawlers though because of their size. Their girth alone is typically 4 times that of a conventional earthworm. (If not more.) They are also much longer! |

Humm.. Not the same? They look the same in the pictures. Maybe fish bait shops sell nightcrawlers, I'll have a look at them to know the difference.
If mealworms are already big enough for them, I'm not imagining one of my geckos trying to eat an adult earthworm due to the size of them! But if they are safe, fine! That was concerning me! Geckos are curious enough to eat something twitching in front of them =) Thanks Rich!! =)

How big are your earthworms???
We buy earthworms from the internet sometimes to try with our lizards (although the bearded dragons haven't eaten one yet, mainly I believe because they just cannot pick them up with their tongues - slimy creatures!!) so I don't see why there would be a problem if your geckos ate them.
