I just finished feeding Sean's corn snake. She wolfed down the first pinkie and seemed to be searching around for more. Is this a sign that it is time to give her two instead of one pinkie? She is fed twice a week.

Hello,

In comparison the the snakes widest section, how does it compare to the girth of the pinkie? (I ask because it may be time to upgrade the size of the prey.)

If you have frozen pinkies, use them up by feeding them 2 at a time if the snake is capable and willing to eat them. If the snake is eating 2 pinkies, 2 times a week, I would suggest cutting the feedings down to once every 5-7 days and upgrading the pinkies to fuzzies. This all depends of course on the girth of the snake at its widest section.

(Does the pinkie leave a lump in the snake after it is eaten?)

When the snake(s) swallow the pinkie there is no sign that it has eaten. No lumps etc. Ok where is a good source for frozen fuzzies.

Cornsnakes are just such little piggies! I have some that it doesn't matter what they are fed they will immediately be out cruising around looking to see if they missed something! You can't judge by their behavior. If you allow it they will eat themselves into obesity! I too use one prey about the size or a touch bigger than the snakes body at the widest part. If the pink is leaving no noticeable lump its time to move up.
I get all my feeders from www.rodentpro.com.

Thanks for the site. I feed both snakes in different containers separate from their aquarium. They sure know what is going to happen when they get put in those boxes. Even the one who wouldn't eat has now gotten it down pat.

Hello,

Thats great. Its good for them to associate the feeding tub with feedings because normal handling times won't be confused for feedings.

A "rule" to follow is that the prey they eat should leave a "bump" that is noticeable. if you see a bump, the prey is certainly larghe enough. If no bump is present, its time to upgrade.

Another rule of thumb for this is the girth of the pinky should and can be 1 to 1.5 times the girth of the snake...
