Sexing Mice
I have googled this, and came up with a couple of sites dealing with the distance between the 2 openings on their anuses. Also, I know that only females have nipples.
My problem is that I can't judge very well on the first one, and it's hard to see nipples through fur.
I am pretty sure I now have 3 pregnant females and one smaller male (I just started).
Anyone have some advice to this newbie on sexing mice?
Thanks, by the way. You guys are great !

Once you're used to it it's fairly easy but if you have pregnant females you should have been ablr to recognize the male before the were bred as just before the male is potent you can definately spot the noogies from the rear or from the side as they extend well behind his rear legs.

Gotcha... I had the reptile store pick them out for me, so I will keep an eye on this.

I hope that you have some luck with them because the ones that you get from a pet store or feeders from a reptile store are so inbred that they usually only average 10 or so pups to a litter and are short lived. If you decide to get more, check around your area for mouse breeders or go to a reptile show and talk to one of the mice/rat breeders that are usually there. They are usually more than willing to let you have some good breeding stock and it's usually less than you are paying in a reptile or pet store.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, Tennessee doesn't have Reptile shows.
I have seen "fancy mice" in other pet stores. Would these be better?

Actually no. The fancies are smaller than the white lab mice and have smaller litters.

LOL AND agreed on the "noogies," mostly because it's sooo true! Chunk, our little stud, is... well... shall we say, rather well endowed? ... in that area.
