Hornworms?
... Has anyone used them before? We have a tomato garden in the family and my mother in law dropped of some to our house this week and I was just wondering of the nutritional value of them and if I should attempt to remove the horn before feeding them to the dragons...

Hello,
I tried them once. I don't know of their nutritional value, but since I had 25 of them, I gave them to my dragons. I used scissors and sniped off the horn "just in case". My dragons took them without hesitation.

The horns were my main concern, thanks. I guess I will snip them off and see if the dragons like them tonight...

There are some suppliers out there that sell hornworms. I can't think of who right now though. LOL Several people on my water dragon mailing list feed them to their dragons. I haven't heard of any problems. (I don't think they bother clipping the horn - but it can't hurt to be cautious) I don't know the nutritional stats on them, but I think they are ok for occasional feeding.
Just be careful with "wild caught" bugs ... make sure you are picking them from areas where they haven't been in contact with pesticides or herbicides.

You do not need to clip the horn. They cannot harm your dragon. But the tomatos they eat can be toxic to your herp. You should offer other foods first. Mullberryfarms.com sells commercial hornworm food or I think you can feed red bell peppers.

I heard they are very good for Chameleons.
