oh we have those to, but we have these realy big ones that fly around at night and they're black , and three inches long, i have no idea what they might be then

no I am farmiliar with the giant water bug (see them in ditches and reserviors around here all the time) and thats not it they're bigger than a giant water bug. these never reside in water
|

Hmm, its over 3 inches long, black, and flies at night you say? Are you sure its not a bat? (lol, just kidding  ). There aren't many insects that get that size around here except dragonflies, moths, etc.

Giant water bugs can reach up to 4 inches...I doubt they're bigger than that!
Can you describe any of their other features?

they're of an elongate shape, give a painful bite, have long wings, the wing covers are jet black but the underside and legs are dark brown

eww they sound mean a really mean looking bug is those elephant beetles, one of those I caught bent a plastic fork with those pinchers......and I hope I never ever see one again, my peacocks and other poultry wouldnt even eat it! cant say I blame them itd prolly take off their tongues...
