Africans like it much warmer, but can't handle the cold. If you were keeping them inside in a reptile room, they'd be fine. The Europeans are more mid range and can handle the warm and cool temps (and are the smallest of the three). Canadians are cool only. I have wondered what we have natively here in the States though. I for instance live in Colorado and was curious what kind of nightcrawlers we have.

Thanks, helpful read. I'll still probably order my starter colony, but I have seen others on here talk about grabbing earthworms after heavy rains to use as feeders. It got me wondering what kind we have and the safety of them. It's nice to see that insecticides don't affect them, but would still be concerned with them transporting any poisons onto the herps.

Indeed! JUst because they get into something that doesn't kill them it doesn't mean that it won't harm your pets.
I refuse to feed anything from outside.

And I thought I read somewhere to stay away from redworms, but I don't recall why. If someone else can chime in, that'd be great.
Apparently redworms/red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) emit a bad taste, possibly toxic, to some herps. I would say the night crawlers would be the way to go in terms of palatability. Red worms are great for composting though.
