why the separate container

ok I have questioned this so much and I cant find an answer to it. I know most of you suggest feeding in a seperate container to prevent getting bit and to prevent substrate from being swallowed. Now in my tank I just have news paper so I dont have to worry about the substrate being swallowed by Loretta but wouldnt it make more sense to maybe take the snake out then put the food in the tank then put the snake back? that way they never really know where the food came from, and it removes the need for the tuperware?

just something I have wondered for a long time

i don't exactly follow what your saying but I don't think it really matters where they think the food came from. As long as lorreta sees the food she should eat the food regardless of where it came from. No need for any extra stress of handling.

Just my opinion.

If you don't have the danger of substrate being swallowed, I don't think there's a problem feeding inside the enclosure... I personally prefer feeding in a separate plastic container in a separate room because I can sterilize it and clean up so easily afterwards... I'd hate to have that "thawed rat" smell inside the enclosure in my dining room! (It lingers long enough in my office where I feed!)

We feed most of our snakes in their enclosures, as most of them have newspaper for substrate, and we've never had any problem with them associating us or the tank with food; some of them refuse to eat in a separate enclosure, and some are just too big ! - where would we put a separate feeding box big enough to put a 8.5ft python or boa in?!

Snakes housed together, like our BRBs, are fed in separate enclosures for obvious reasons, and any who are on substrate are fed in a separate box to avoid impaction from swallowing substrate.

Randy with newspaper as the substrate there is no problem with feeding in the tank. One thing. Make sure that you open the tank and handle frequently. If the only time you open the tank is to feed the snake will associate anything coming into the tank as fair game! The problem you may face with putting the prey in and THEN putting the snake in particularly with an aggressive feeder is that it will smell the prey and go into "feeding mode" while you still have the snake in your hands! This increases the possibility of an accidental bite.

My BP will not eat out of his enclosure, he wont eat in it at the moment either, but when he is feeding we have to do it in the tank, we place paper towels down, as he has wood chip substrates, I don't know whether its coinsidence or what, but he is the most aggressive out of all my snakes when we go in his cage, whether thats to do with feeding him in there or not I don't know, it could just be his nature, but he was quite mellow when we first got him.

I don't want to be having to do the same thing with Bounce when she is big, I want feeding totally seperate from her enclosure, I was thinking of using the bath when she's bigger?

I prefer seperate feeding tubs, but with Otis, its just a no go...

We also use a feeder tank,,,more of a personal choice. We handle our snakes frequently and now they know when they go into the tank in the credenza it's dinner time. There disposition is amazing once they are placed in there.

I also use feeding time as time to do maintenance on the enclosures. Since the cnake is out it makes it easier.

I feed my snakes in their enclosures. I've never yet been mistaken for food. They all have newspaper substrate now, so I don't worry about it too much!
