Breeding My Own?

It's getting pretty tiresome going to the pet shop every week to buy food for my little guys - don't get me wrong, I do it every week without fail, but now I'm starting college and it could get in the way of things...

It's good looking after the other animals too though haha, my quails lay and I give an egg every now and then to Max!

So I was wondering if it's better to breed your own feeder things? The only things I can find on the internet is breeding crickets but my Leopard Geckos and my bosc won't even look at them!
They will, however, eat mealworms and grasshoppers - so can anyone give me any tips on breeding these, or any other type of feeder insects?

Also, my brother wanted a rodent pet so I was thinking if he got a mice, we could buy two cages and breed them when we needed pinkies for Max the monitor. Is that ok to do?

thanks

Re: Breeding My Own?

The thing to look at is if it's a time thing to be buying your feeders then growing your own isn't the way to go. It's takes way more work to look after them.
Your Bosc should be on a mainly invertebrate diet with supplemented rodents.
Breeding superworms might be the way to go. You can feed them when small to your Leopard Geckos and when full size to your Bosc.
Here's some info.

I'm surprised that your gecko won't go after crickets!

Breeding mealworms is incredibly simple

I have never heard of anyone breeding grasshoppers over here but since locusts are so popular as a feeder in the UK I suppose that somebody must be doing it!

Re: Breeding My Own?

I have to admit I am in the process of starting my own company to sell live reptile food. And mealworms are very easy to breed however they do require alot more work than just going to the pet store and buying them. You have to change there food out, make sure they have fresh veggies in the bin. And you have to make sure the food does not mold because it will ruin your whole colony. Plus when the mealworms turn to pupa's you have to put in separate bin and watch so when they turn into beetles you can move into another bin. If you read on the internet you will see all the stuff you have to do.

Re: Breeding My Own?

I"m in the process of breeding crickets. I have my first batch of pinheads and they keep growing. I'm hoping that within 4 months, I won't ever have to buy another cricket again. Its lots of work, but worth it considering getting the amount of crickets I needed, even when ordering online, was running me $40 - $50/month. However I have a lot of froggie mouths to feed.
