Supers - Burlap..Screen..Mesh?
So, from my post earlier, I learned quite a bit. I like the idea of placing a mesh or screen in the container with the supers for ease of separating them & cleaning enclosure. My question, where can I find burlap or a mesh bag? Would this be something I should be able to find at a local craft store? I guess I could just go to home depot and buy screen...any ideas?
Also, in the "Keeping and Breeding Superworms" link that Merlin sent me, it mentioned separating the supers in single spice jars to get them to pupate. Anyone know where I can get something similar in a bulk order? Maybe 20-50? Have any of you bred superworms? If so, can you share experiences...THANKS!

You should be able to find burlap at craft and fabric stores. The jars may be found where they sell canning supplies.
Or if you know someone with a baby, have them save the empty baby food jars for you.

Go to a photolab and get some empty film containers. They work great for separating the supers.

Re: Supers - Burlap..Screen..Mesh?
Both great ideas that I probably wouldn't have thought of. How many should I pupate at a time??

Re: Supers - Burlap..Screen..Mesh?
As many as you can. Supers take longer to grow than mealies so getting a colony going takes a little while. Plus they won't all pupate in the same amount of time. I'd do at least 25.
What I found to work best after they have formed beetles is to use a container with a bit of oatmeal in the bottom. Put in pieces of cork and burlap since they like to lay eggs in nooks and crannies.
Just keep putting the beetles in there and carrots for moisture. Scoop out the big worms when required and clean out the dead beetles when necessary.
Keep a lid on the box but not too tight as moisture is required for the eggs to hatch out. Don't want too much moisture though or there will be mold.

Will the beetles try to eat the worms?

Re: Supers - Burlap..Screen..Mesh?
Good point. The worms are pretty quick and always hidden. I've never seen the beetles eat them though.
On a side note, most of the beetles I get are from my monitor enclosure. They are escapees from the dinner dish that burrow into the soil and pupate.
You'll notice they have a bit of a smell to them. My monitors won't eat them so it's pretty handy.

Re: Supers - Burlap..Screen..Mesh?
I find a lot in my Rosehair Tarantula's enclosure. For some reason she wont' eat them, and it's the perfect temp or whatever for them to pupate because if I put a super in there, I have an (UUUUGLY) alien in 2 weeks and a beetle in another few weeks after that. Now..that reminds me...yesterday I looked in her cage to check on her and noticed that there was one beetle that was dead. (I try to remove beetles ASAP!) I saw that it looked like it had been chewed on, and with closer inspection saw about 10-15 little bitty white bugs. I had these same bugs in an enclosure that set up for a rescued Pacman (she may have brought them in). There was NEVER any close contact between the two, but I used the same brick of Eco Earth to substrate the cages. Do you think these are mites? I treated the frogs cage for mites, kept in empty with papertowels for a couple of weeks, and redid the enclosure with NO ecoearth. Do you think the bugs could have been in the EcoEarth? It was purchased from Petsmart. Mites aren't typically white are they?
