It can take up to a week and a half all the way up to a month! It varies for each pupae. Some die and turn totally black or brown, some don't. From my experiences I put a bedding under them and for some reason most of them lived through the process. if I ever get pics of my beetle coloies going on in my 11 gal rubbermaids I;ll show you how good it works. BTW, It's winter and I have no heat in my room nor close to it. It is very cold in my room yet they still live fine.

Here are some sites to help you with your breeding:

Be Patient

Make sure they don't have anything in the container with them that will mold, make sure they have plenty of ventilation, and with these conditions met, forget about them for a few weeks. In time, the twitching fetal creatures will transform into beetles without any help from you. As for how long it will take exactly, Well, I dunno. I personally use the forget about them method that I described above. I swear, watching mealies go through metamorphosis is just like watching water while waiting for it to boil; the more attentive you are the longer it seems like it takes. Just be patient. Good luck

it's in a box at a store, just get something soft and non toxic. I thought you were talking about pupaes.

You can buy bran in any animal feed store. If you live in a city you may have to call around. I use Old-Fashioned Oatmeal(not the quick oats). You can buy a large box generic store brand for a few $$$ and I mix in Gerger 4 grain baby cereal. I also use carotts for moisture, they don't mold they just dry up.

The pupae will turn into beetles when they are ready and can be kept on the same bedding. Just ignore them, as Moldy said they will turn into beetles.

Ventilation is very important. I use plastic shoeboxes with the top cut open and window screening attached on the inside.
