Random Thoughts and Such...
Random little thought here, I'm not sure if anyone else has ever thought about this, but I wonder if Nutria ( Home - Nutria.com) would be a good food source for Large Snakes (Large Boas, Burms, Retics, Anacondas, so on)
I would assume that nutritionally they would be similar to rats, and unless i'm mistaken this is something some snakes would come across, and prey upon in the wild.
They can get rather large (12 llbs), and appear they would be great for people who really don't want to feed "bunny foo foo" to there snakes.
Breeding sounds relatively simple, and in many areas no one would miss the trapping of a initial breeding group (though I would not feed this group to the snakes, who knows what they could have been exposed to, just breed from them) as they are an invasive species.
Just thought i'd start a disscussion on this, see what everyone else thinks about it.
never know, could be on to something.

Re: Random Thoughts and Such...
I don't see any reason why they couldn't. A rodent is a rodent!

Re: Random Thoughts and Such...
But it's cute... So are bunnies... And mice... Ugh.
I want a corn snake so bad... But I don't know if it'll eat if it's under my care. Heh...
Glad my snake only eats crickets.
That's the good thing about such a little snake. :]

Re: Random Thoughts and Such...
Feeding frozen thawed takes care of that.
They aren't half as cute dead.

Re: Random Thoughts and Such...
And once they are in your freezer, taking up space you just want the snake to hurry up and eat them

Re: Random Thoughts and Such...
I also only feed frozen, it is less expensive and remove health risks and accidental bites. I have been using Rodentpro.com. The quality is great and the prices are reasonable. If you only have a few snakes and do not need to buy in bulk most major petstores are carrying frozen now.

Re: Random Thoughts and Such...
The idea here would be to breed, raise to whatever point you want then kill and freeze, they grow rather fast, and you wouldnt need a huge breeding group.
Personally, I don't have a problem feeding f/t or p/k rabbits, they can just be a pain to get unless you order offline in bulk, plus I, and I think a decent number of others don't really like breeding rabbits for food, first of all, most rabbits are more personable, there less hardy, and they are a bit cuter, as pointed out by a few of us here.
Nutria however, pretty ugly little buggers, and there nasty to boot, but more importantly, there hardier, cheaper to feed (depending what your feeding) and to top it all off there invasive, so every one you feed, feels like a blow for the environment. (okay I realize your breeding them it does'nt count, go with me on this one)

Re: Random Thoughts and Such...
lol yeah I'd most definately have to feed f/t.
I think I could do that.
Its just when you see the little guys' breathe and hear them squeak...
Ugh it kills me!!
And those nutria thingies are cute to me.. x]]
Not like rabbits though.
I adore rabbitssss!
Pretty much anything that's fuzzy I would consider cute..
Or scaley.
Snakes, lizards and such.
And frogs...
Hmm.
I could find something cute about just about everything. lol
