Trying New Foods
Does anyone have any help in getting my tree frogs to eat waxworms? I have been primarily feeding crickets and would like to try waxworms. I have tried mealworms before with NO luck what so ever. Ended up giving them to my step-dad to use for fish bait!! I have a couple of tree frogs that are looking a little thin and would like to add some fat reserves to them if possible. I have tried putting a few waxworms in a separate container and putting the frogs in with them. After 20 minutes the waxworms were dead, (I think the frogs peed on them, saw some pee in the bottom of the container.) I haven't tried hand feeding yet, I can had feed a couple of them crickets but they seem a little scared of my fingers. The only tongs I have are actually tweezers with sharp points, WON'T use them (don't worry Liz ) Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Trying New Foods
Try hemostats, they worked for me with my baby turtles.

Re: Trying New Foods
have you tried earth worms?
I had little to no luck with wax worms. Grace actually took one in her mouth, held it there for a second, spat it out and then gave me this, "mom what the **** was that?" look.
Also, which frogs are these? If big enough, you could try a newborn pinkie mouse. Most pet stores sell them live for about 50 cents. The newborns that are a day old will move around enough for your frogs to eat them, and they don't have eyes or a biting ability yet.
Another idea is to change up your cricket diet, or maybe move up to larger crickets.

Re: Trying New Foods
Just average size tree frogs 2-2.75" at the most. Was thinking earthworms when I decided on the wax worms. May be going fishing soon, will use them for bait. Will try earthworms when we get back from vacation. Have found a suitable frog sitter while we're gone, mainly just changing out the water everyday in all the tanks. Will update when we return!!

Re: Trying New Foods
pinkies might be too big for them at that size. I'd give worms a try. Night crawlers might be too big, but there are smaller red worms that might work.
