Fruit Flies...
I'm planning on getting some poison dart frogs.
The main part of their diet, so I've been told, is fruit flies.
You can't buy them like you do crickets around here, so I figure I'm going to have to breed them.
Someone also said a culture kit is like, fifty dollars?
Is there a cheaper or easier [[or both.. lol]] way to breed fruit flies, that is just as good?
What about catching some?
Could you breed them if you catch them?
I've been posting a zillion new threads lately.
I have so many questions that all belong in different places.
Haha

Re: Fruit Flies...
You're looking for wingless(flightless) fruit flies. While there are cultures for $50, that's a pretty serious breeding culture, you can pick up $10-$15 cultures. I know petco sells some, though they are usually rather bad.
The cultures are the easiest way to breed enough to feed, and even at $20, if you buy a decent culture, you can get quite a few flies out of it, usually using one culture, to start more.

Re: Fruit Flies...
I have no idea about anything that has to do with culture stuff.
I just know it's called a culture kit really, and I guessed it had the stuff you'd need to breed fruit flies.
But you know, I have no idea what any of that stuff is. lol.
So, if I get a culture kit, would I need to keep buying more to get new flies, or would one be good for like... a long time?

Re: Fruit Flies...
They will usually last a few months, and you can produce more cultures with those you already have, here's a good link to a site that sells cultures, and everything you need to start them, or more, along with information how.

Re: Fruit Flies...
I noticed Petco mentioned. Don't bother, the fly tubs they sell are pretty bad, and I do mean horrible.

Re: Fruit Flies...
I second that one Morphed, I bought a culture from Petco. One feeding is all I got out it, and for $7, what a rip!

Go see this guy. I got 6 off him for 24 bucks for 32 oz containers. You can buy a couple and swap them out and make more if you need to..

Re: Fruit Flies...
No worries. We don't consider it spamming to share pertinent info about places to get neccessary supplies.
We recommend sources all the time.
