Re: Who Here Uses Roaches?

Wow. I just wanted to say thankyou for your posts.

To those worried about escapes, I have a roach room and millions of roaches in containers. I use boric acid in the room and sticky traps in my house. I rarely see roaches on the traps and the ones I do are often after I have fed everything. I do see some in the roach room on occasion, but they are usually dying.

Most of the roach species out there need 40-50% humidity and at least 75 degrees if not the mid eighties and preferably the 90's to thrive.

The exception is the Blatta lateralis, aka rusty reds/red racers, turkistan reds. They do the possess the capability to infest, but it is easily avoided and eliminated when it happens.

I have been keeping roaches a year n a half now and I feed them to my colection. When I see the way the animals ( lizards frogs and others too) attack these with such gusto, I know I am doing the best for my critters.

I will never use crickets again ( well maybe 1000 or 2 every so often as a treat

Re: Who Here Uses Roaches?

I haven't given roaches to my Bearded Dragons, I haven't been able to find any locally that are small enough- our Savannah loves the Madagascar hissers though... I have to order a fruit fly culture this weekend to get ready for the baby Bearded Dragons and will probably add some roaches to it for the Savannah & adult Bearded Dragons.

Re: Who Here Uses Roaches?

I feed dubia roaches to my leopard geckos, and they love them. So I started my own colony. In my oppinion, they are much better than crickets.

Re: Who Here Uses Roaches?

You can order roaches from most major feed animal suppliers. Around where I am, it is insane to purchase roaches, I have been doing everything in my power to keep them out. I have friends that caught them and started colonies for feeding, and they seem to do well easily.

Re: Who Here Uses Roaches?

I use various species of raoches as feeders. My critters like them more than crickets. They are alot more meaty than crickets too. I have to say though hands down the best all around feeder roach would have to be Blaptica dubia.

Re: Who Here Uses Roaches?

If anyone has specific details on breeding the Dubias, it would help me out. I know the basics but a little sketchy on the breeding process.

Re: Who Here Uses Roaches?

I know Mealworms, Crickets and Red Worms at Worm Man's Worm and Crickets Farm sells them. I also know some people have had bad experiences with that web site. But I'll also say I order from them all the time and don't have problems.

Re: Who Here Uses Roaches?

I raised and bred B. Dubia and B. Discoidalis roaches. I found that they were great feeders for both my bearded dragon, and my ex's emperor scorpions. It seemed, that they bred readily without anything from me. Something to help them breed is to use egg cartons for them to hide in. it's also important to keep the humidity and heat up, so that they can be healthy. B. Dubia and B. Discoidalis are great because they are a non-climbing/flying species. As I mentioned before in your other post, Mike, they can easily be kept in an open 10 gallon tank.

Re: Who Here Uses Roaches?

Hi. So as I am reading here the orange spotted seem to be the least likely to escape a proper enclosure? Which kind did you end up with riminaal and do you find them to be worth the investment? Thank you for answering my email by the way I apprecate the help.
