Ewwwwww Escaped Supers

Last night as I was getting ready for bed I picked up a pile of clothes from the floor and found a HUGE DISGUSTING SUPERWORM. Well that's what I get for throwing my clothes on the floor and I won't do it again any time soon! However, I checked the herp cupboard and found that the DISGUSTING little booger had escaped by widening one of the air holes in the cup via chewing I assume. I taped the hole shut and captured the GROSS worm but I'm not sure how many got out since I dunno how many I had. Since he chewed on plastic is there anything else in the house they will chew? That could get me into serious trouble

They love wood, at least soft wood like cork bark. I had a few actually burrow into a peice of wood in a viv, he was in there for weeks. I don't think they would go after anything painted or finished in any way for that matter. If they burrow into something theyll come out with a little 'wet' persuasion.

Speaking of Superworms

Does anyone know if super worms ever pupate and turn into beetles like meal worms do? I've never had one do this so I was just wondering.

I've pupated them but they've never metamorphosed for me. The pupa SMELL to high heaven! According to Rich you have to put them into little seperate containers like film canisters to make it work. Maybe he'll come give the details.

Hello,
They do indeed turn to beetles. The beetles are actually 3 times the size of the darkling beetle.

The quickest way to have them morph is to house them in tight quartered containers. Film containers would be the correct size. I personally used some empty spice containers.

Place a small amount of substrate/food in the bottom of the container and toss in 1 superworm. Make sure that the container is well ventilated and that the super can't escape.

Place that container on a dark shelf or in a closet and leave it alone for 7 days. At that time, go in and check on the worm. It should already be curled up or perhaps may have already turned into a pupae.

It takes roughly 2-3 weeks for the beetle to surface. At that time, it can be housed with other beetles.

The beetles will breed for almost 3-4 months before dieing.

I hope this has helped.

I've been paranoid about these super worms this past couple of days, I had a pack of 3 cakes at the side of my bed, there was 2 left inside as my partner ate one, so the packet had been opened, before I went to sleep I placed the T.V remote on top of the packet, while dozing off the remote fell to the floor, and the packet kept making noises as if something was rummaging about inside, and I was thinking the only think big and strong enough to push the remote would be one of them super worms lol, i tried to shine a torch on the packet, but couldnt see anything, by this time I was thinking it would be inside the cake that night I had a horrible dream about them taking over my house
