Cricketfood.com mealworm bedding is right on target. They have everything.

Do a search on drgecko.com for mealworms and you will find some suitable food for mealworms.
Also a great source of food for mealworms is chicken mash, chicken feed, turkey feed, tropical fish flakes, bran, oats, shredded up dogfood, catfood, repcal beardy pellets, greens, and baby rice food.

Good moisture could be potatoes, carrots, apples, zuchini, squash, some vines from greens that hold a large water source, and baby carrots.

5 pounds could last you more than a couple months most likely.

1000 adults and an inch or so of substrate will not get dirty enough to change it probably. But since you are buying adults you should probably get a very small mesh like screen you would normally use for kitchen reason. Like straning spaghetti, except you have smaller holes and the whole thing is made of small wire screening.

Second of all, Breeding requires PATIENCE! Keep the beetles and eggs in room temperature or a couple (literally a couple) degrees above. Truthfully I have my mealworm beetles breeding during winter right now and it's really quite cold, especially when I go to sleep with the fan on high. yet I am still finding a **** load of microscopic mealies. So the eggs can withstand lower temps, just not for way too long.

Mealworm beetles lay their eggs in the substrate they are on. Which is virtually anything.

Remember though, PATIENCE IS KEY! The truth is that you will probably have a very hard time even finding any mealworm s for about a month after hatching.

Considerng mealworms do not have much of a scent at all, you should probably check for mold, smell the water source, check if your substrate has kind of a scent after a week or so. It usually either is them pooping so much that your substrate looks like pure dust or something like that with some little specs.

Mealworm beetles should be housed on a substrate. Preferrably one of the things I have noted on ths thread already. I find using chicken feed the best. Theres no real use in the cricket food until you notice alot of baby mealworms. But yes, potatoes are a good water source. The substrate is the food.

I usually have about 5 out of a thousand or so of shriveled up mealies that are white and really hard. But if you are talking about shriveled up hard black or dark brown, that means they are dead. Mealworms die. The trick is to get healthy mealworms. Preferabbly from an onlne breeder who really cares for their mealworms.
