buying crickets

When I got my gecko from the pet store, a chick in there told me to be carefull where I buy crickets from. Was she saying that b/c most places don't sell gutloaded crickets, or was she talking about them being deseased? B/c I can gut load them. Just wondering b/c the pet store is like 25 min away and theres a bait shop right down the road. Oh and one more thing, look at my profile I just pimped it out! lol

Re: buying crickets

They do not come gut loaded. She was most likely saying that because some placed may not be very clean and the crickets you buy may not be good.

Re: buying crickets

You may want to ask whoever you decide from what they do feed their crickets. That will give you a good idea if they will be okay for your animal or not.

A Flaming Lips fan, huh? Very nice.

Re: buying crickets

I would be hesitant to buy from a bait shop. They are not selling them as feeders but for use as fishbait and as such are not concerned with how healthy they are or wnat they may be exposed to.

And no one sells gutloaded crickets. That is just something you do yourself.

Re: buying crickets

The petstore I got the crickets from said that they feed them this solid water that has nutrients in it. Its called Cricket water bites, by nature zone. It says that its got 0.12% calcium in it. Is that gutloading? Or do I need to feed the crickets other stuff along with it?

YOu should still gutload them at home. That stuff will keep them alive but you can feed them better. I feed mine scraps of veggies from making dinner that night, or a slice of apple, potato, broccoli, spinach, carrots, squash or any other veggie that is in the house. I don't feed them calcium since its easy to overdue it and kill them. I just dust twice a week before feeding. You can also toss in a few bits of cat or dog dry kibble for some protien.

Re: buying crickets

You need to feed the crickets so they stay live long enough for you to feed them to the gecko anyway. You might as well feed them healthy stuff that will benefit the higher level of the food chain.

I couldn't resist playing Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots after reading this thread. It's sad, but it's probably my favorite song of theirs. I have to say that Flaming Lips is great design music, too.
