Large scale rat grow operation
Before people hound me about pictures--I DIDN"T HAVE A CAMERA. I didn't expect it to be such a large scale operation. I went with an aquaintance of mine. He had approx 5000 rats breeding and 15000 mice. It sure looked like a lot of work to accompish. He had the majority of them setup with auto watering systems and was working on the rest. Feeding them took two and a half 50 gal drums of pellets a day. Currently he's expanding the rats to be able to double his capacity. He said he would rather work with rats than mice. You get more for them and they don't smell as bad. Hopefully I'll get back there sometime soon and take some pictures.

Re: Large scale rat grow operation
Anyone see the film "Willard" ? Just came to mind for some reason...
Rats smell better than mice??? The defrosted ones sure smell worse!
Sounds like that guy has quite a production going. Too bad about the pics, but we'll forgive you.

Re: Large scale rat grow operation
He sells across Canada to suppliers. Mice smell worse because they basically urinate 10 times to every one a rat does. I'll try to get some pics next time but the lighting is pretty low. Rodents don't care for bright lights I guess.

Freedom Breeders has a similar operation... it is indeed impressive. I was amazed at the number of rodents in one building! The staff wasn't concerned with the few escapees that I saw while visiting.

Re: Large scale rat grow operation
That is a lot of rodents! I had mice when I was a kid. My brother had a snake that ate pinkies and he had asked my mother to pick up two at the pet store near her work. She came home with adult mice! He was going to flush them down the toilet because they were too large for the snake I rescued them and it turned out that they were male and female and needless to say I ended up with babies! I didn't keep them long because they smelled HORRIBLE!! I did manage to find them all homes with friends of mine.
