Don't mate the females at 4 weeks of age. That is really too young as the females are growing themselves. The litters will be smaller and so will the pups (we've seen this for a long time in our research lab). They are more likely to cannibalize the young as well. 2.5 months is a better age for both sexes. Males don't mature until 6-8 weeks anyways. Females, depending on the strain, do mature by 4-5 weeks. Also, you don't want back to back pregnancies on the females as this likewise puts a big drain on them as they will be both pregnant and lactating at the same time. So take the male out before she has her pups (they typically have a 19 day gestation period with day 0 being the day of mating) as they will go into heat the same day they have their pups.
