Crickets and meal worms

We just recently started buying those gross meal worm things... YUCK. we had the super ones and the basilisk really enjoyed them... one of them didnt seem to make it.. (so ofcourse, he didnt eat it)... so we bought some of the smaller ones for cheaper... (which he dont seem to care for)... but his other food, his crickets... they seem to be eating the meal worms... is that common? Should we not put them in together??? i dont understand if thats normal behavour, cuz I really do not like those crickets, OR worms... BLEH.

Thanks
Jo

Crickets will eat just about anything you put near them. I use mealworms only as treats, they are high in chitan and can cause an impaction if you feed too many.

Absolute little monsters they are!
When I worked in the pet trade we would occasionally have anole escapees that found their way into the cricket bin. Not a good move!
All that would be left was a skeleton!

Yep, those crickets are carnivorous little blighters!! Although I've known the meal worms to eat through pretty much anything too! Still bottom of the food chain when it comes to our herps though

If you have to put meal worms in, and there are crickets about as well, you could try putting a small bowl of veg in there for the crickets to eat - this will keep them away from the meal worms, stop them bothering the lizards if not eaten immediately, and help gutload them

Variety is important, but so is keeping your feeders alive. Crix should be kept in something that has places to hide to keep them from eating each other over territory, and they can be gutloaded with a wide variety of foods to give your dragon the best nutrition. Mealies, however, should be kept in a container with something they can burrow in, and eat pretty much plant matter. Leafy greens, like bok choy and collards make a good gutload for mealworms. The smaller mealworms can be kept in your refrigerator, but superworms can't handle the cold.

Breeding Crickets - Acheta domesticus

Some links I made a thread for awhile ago. Shows how to keep and care for supers, mealies, and crickets. Includeing other things I believe.
