which Foods
Ok I've been reading through the various threads on various forums the last few days. I have yet to find an actual mention of which dog foods people feed to their breeding mice. I went to the store and every dog food I looked at had red dye in it (red 40). I have also heard mention of pig pellets from a country type store. we have a tractor supply with cow, chick, rabbit pellets. did not see any pig pellets but I just did a quick once over as I was in a hurry. The lab block foods seem to be out of the ? as I have not found anything available locally and the stuff we do have for feeding mice is in small bags that cost more then I am willing to spend for something I am probably going to need alot of.
So those of you that breed mice for your snakes and feed them dog food. What exact dog food do you use? and What about the pig,cow or rabbit pellets as food for breeding mice? These are readily available and about 10-12 bucks for a 50# bag. |

I typically feed my mice mouse food, supplemented with fruits, vegetables, and protein. Apparently some people do feed their mice dog food, but I wouldn't do it. The healthier your mice, the healthier your snakes will be. Dog food isn't designed to meet the nutrition requirements of a mouse. If it were, then they'd make mouse food out of it. It's fine for dogs though. The same goes for pig, cow, and rabbit pellets. They're meant for pigs, cows, and rabbits, not mice. Though mice can certainly eat these foods, it shouldn't make up the bulk of their diet because the nutrients in these foods are not in the right proportions for mice.
