Re: Desert grasses

Pretty good price one packet of wild grass seed mix, one packet of grass seed and wildflower mix plus shipping for $12. Desert vivarums are harder to setup than tropical I find because of the high heat. My enclosure is four feet and I'm not sure if that's big enough to do it. Deep substrate is a must for any plants to survive. Mine will be 10 inches at least. I can't get started until I sell the current inhabitant so I can redo the substrate and get the plants and grass established so they don't get uprooted.

Re: Desert grasses

Unfortunately my grass doesn't seem to be taking off like I hoped it would. A few more weeks will determine if it is a bust. I had luck growing some outside but it's not as hot as my enclosure.

Re: Desert grasses

Here's a picture.
Basically I decided to plant it in pots. Monitors are just so destructive I didn't want it grow only to have it uprooted. Also I couldn't figure out a way to get proper soil for the grass and yet have a solid burrowable substrate. I also scattered the grass seed and wildflower seed around to see if it would root in the substrate. I highly doubt it but it's worth a shot. After all they are a desert grass seed.

Re: Desert grasses

Many arid regions have a wet season, and that's when most of the grasses sprout... try giving the habitat a rainy season and see what happens. Perhaps they well establish themselves after that.

Re: Desert grasses

I have been trying to keep it moist so it will root. Probably just too hot for it.
