Thats the way it is in most states. Here in GA they are somewhat vigilant when it comes to being aware of who is selling illegal herps. Although I have never heard of anything being done about those shops or vendors who do.
I'm very glad that you are going to contact the right people. you are doing the right thing and dont ever forget that

When I was looking for aquariums for our expansion, someone who had aquariums for sale contacted me. The catch, some of them were occupied. One had a bd, one a corn snake another fish and the last an alligator. I maybe could have handled the first three but an alligator (but you know it was only hatched last month). You know I never responded buck to those people. I know that in the Battle Creek area there is an alligator/crock rescue center. The person has like 20 that have been donated. Many times the animal control from Detroit would contact him, as they would find one in a drug bust.

this is precisely the reason why the world is in the condition it is...people have no respect for nature anymore. *shakes head* tsk tsk tsk.

This is what the owner of the pet store told my mom when we bought a turtle, "You have to be an educator or a scientist or something like that to buy this so you need to sign this paper just to be on the safe side, but no one ever comes around and checks." I'll contact the DNR anyway.

If this is in fact a buisness, then it is regulated and they are permitted to sale herps. If alligators are not banned from your state/city/zone, then there really isn't much you can do except try to regulate crocodilians in the trade within your state, without getting a statewide ban. Which may happen since it's always easier that way.

My local pet store sells them once in a while, he has sold at least 10 in my town within the last few months. I think that you should have to get an exotic/dangerous animal license to have them at all. Most people who buy them think that they won't grow very fast, but they can. They are more dangerous than owning a pet wolf in some respects. I think that if it is legal then it should be licensed.

I thinks its not right to keep aligators or crocs they are wild, dangerous reptiles they could eat your dog or any other pets, plus they wouldnt be easy to look after.

We have snakes that could eat certain dogs and cats, they are effectivly wild, does this mean we should not be allowed to keep them?
A croc or gator, to people with the relevant experience and space, is no harder to care for than alot of reptiles....and as for eating other pets...if you owned one you would hve it in a secure enclosure so there would be no chance of that happening.
But I do agree that there should be bigger restrictions on the sale of these animals, over here in the UK you have to have a DWA licence, and these are not that easy to odtain and can be expensive depending where you live.

I agree with Joe. The blanket "wild and dangerous" criteria would affect many of the reptiles we commonly keep as a pet.

A boa constrictor could kill a small dog or cat, a cornsnake could kill a hamster or a parakeet. At what point would it end? You see where this is going?
There are qualified people to whom keeping an alligator is perfectly feasable and if done responsibly is quite safe.
However I too think that they should be more difficult for just anybody to go in and buy. There should be a requirement that you have the facility in place to house them (as an adult size) and that it be open to inspection BEFORE you aquire the animal.

I would love to have a pet alligator.
Unfortunately for me, I'm not that stupid. ;p I lack the space and the experience -and I stress the SPACE, once again. I would never ever ever be able to take a baby animal and then just turn it loose when it got that big. I grow to love my pets. It would be miserable in a small enclosure, not to mention when it grew up, I doubt I could restrain it properly. (Well, maybe, if I were trained.)
It's obvious to anyone who uses their heads that, no matter how "neat" these things are, you can't just decide it would be fun to play with them. I hope to work with large herps in zoos one day - where the animals will have plenty of space, food, and love...from a distance
