Where Do I Take Baby Alligator
My son is caring for a baby alligator (about 12" long) over the summer for a science teacher at school. When he asked the teacher where the alli would go when it gets big, he said " I will be retired by then and it won't be my problem."
I am very uncomfortable with this and would like to find a place (with his permission) to take this little guy so he won't grow up to be euthanized or let go somewhere inappropriate. Any ideas? |

Re: Where Do I Take Baby Alligator
Where are you from? Have you tried any rescues in your area? Some may not be able to help you, but they may lead you in the right direction.
I do find his response rather disgusting, and disappointing for a teacher. They are supposed to set an example for our kids. I would be having a chat with the school superintendent about his attitude towards the care of his class pets, and what that attitude also teaches our young ones!

Re: Where Do I Take Baby Alligator
And I as well.
Taking the attitude that any living thing is disposable as long as its "Not my problem anymore" is bad enough for the general public. A teacher, portraying that attitude to his students, is completely outrageous! It would also be a good idea to check with your local wildlife department. Depending on where you are located it may be illegal for you to have the gator in your possession. In my city it is an offense to possess any crocodilian species on other than commercial property. They will seize it and write you a hefty fine!

Re: Where Do I Take Baby Alligator
Thank you to all who replied. I am in Kansas City. I will try to find a rescue or something. Is the local wildlife department part of parks and recreation or would my local humane society be able to tell me how to get in touch with them? I know I sound incredibly dumb but I have never had to contact these types of agencies before.
This really is a horrible situation being that it involves the school. Thanks again! |

Re: Where Do I Take Baby Alligator
The wildlife department will be listed as a state agency in the phone book.
Parks and recreation will be a city agency.

Re: Where Do I Take Baby Alligator
Wow,
Some teachers! I am really surprised, I am a teacher I have class pets everywere. I think their an important part of my teaching and couldn't think of another teacher saying something so mean. Sometimes I end up learning about the pets with the students but thats when its fun! Like what was suggested the wild life rescues should have a list of people that have rescues for the little guy. Also some pet stores that specializes in reptiles may be able to help you. |

Re: Where Do I Take Baby Alligator
Kansas is a tough one for me. I'm in Florida. If the rescues can't help, maybe the city zoo. We wouldn't have those kinds of critters, heck we can see them anytime if we head out west. If you don't have any luck let me know. I live by both the Seminole and Miccosukee Indian reservations and they have farms or perhaps release programs. It's still small enough in Florida to not be killed if it is in a residential neighborhood. We also have companies that will come for wild alligators and/or crocs in canals, lakes, driveways (yes, it happens) and depending on the size, they release them into the Everglades.
