I got to thinking, where on your leg was the bite? For some reason I had thigh meat on the brain, and if that was the case, was thinking femoral artery (as well as other uhhh "vitals" in the area), and if it was the thigh and it missed the artery you were lucky, if it was none of the above it was just my mind on a tangent that had no factorial basis. Again I'll shut up now . . .

Well Colleen-Yes I have a WHOLE new respect now.The thing is,Iv handled this countless times before (so I was surprised). If I could have done something differently I would have pinned his head and the put on the band. It was the meat on the side of my knee (left inside-right leg) Lucky he didnt get ahold of anything else, he atempted a roll but grabbed him before he could roll all the way over. Took one more person with a snake hook to pry off the jaws. Any kind of crocadilian is not safe! There is a pet store in my town that sells dwarf caimans. They dont give any info on it,like it could take a hand off when it got bigger!
That is kind of morbid wanting to see pics. (Like an Alice Cooper song or something)maybe the scars.

Zip, just had a post earlier Sunday on craigslist.com about someone who had a baby gator for sale. "He is nice friendly and should be handled everyday" "This is definitely an animal for any reptile lover".. I hit the reply button really quickly and said where can I pick him up.. NOT!!!

Colleen-Id take him,and give him to the zoo!People just dont understand the dangers of keeping something like that in or around your home. They should be left in the wild in my opinion.
Gators used to be close to extinction and when people found out you could breed them easily in captivity(in the wild they will get around a foot per year, gator farmers get them to grow around 2),they bred and re-released them in the wild and as of now there are some 2 mil. gators in FL and surrounding areas. An average wild American alligator(as of right now)Can reach up to 19 ft.Thats enormous, but we havnt seen anything larger than a 12-14 footer in a long time.Because they are extremely dangerous and ignorant people kill them.
The one we have are the ones that were givin to us by TWRA,cought in our area!Gators are not native to TN so it basically says that someone had a pet that got too big and they let it go,that could verey easily ruin an ecosystem.

Around here our zoos won't take them either, so that wouldn't be an option LOL. You can keep all the gators you want, but don't count me in on the project. I cry when my Bearded Dragon bites me. LOL

Due to sporadic surveys, Florida being the more aggressor, counts were conducted by night-light hunts through out certain areas in Florida. Depending on the year, only 7-22 areas were conducted in the surveys. I think 1980 had a bit more areas than that. (Not exactly a close cased study.)

Farming took place mainly for leather products since hunting was no longer allowed and releasing animals weren't supported then.

Anyway, because of how fast the alligator population increased, most believe that alligators were not as endangered as people once thought; going from one classification to another within 10 years is largely unheard of with any animal. Especially an animal that endures a 70-95% survival loss, even today. (measured by MKA) And, regulated hunting started up not more than 20 years after.

Also, growth rates will vary depending on location and other stats. One foot a year is generally secluded for the captive species under ideal situations.

I'm curious, why didn't you just tuck that beast under your arm?

I hold the base of the animal under my arm with my right hand holding the jaws shut. Putting on a band or duct tape is simple for me with my left hand.
You can also reverse arms. I do this for my 2-3' animals.
