Snake mites...

CURSES!

Well, it happened. My baby got snake mites. I have no idea where they came from, but there it is. I've found three on him so far, and so now it's time for the hard work.

So here is my game plan: Take everything out of his cage, dump the aspen chips along with everything wood, soak the rock/plastic stuff in hot water. Remove the snake and put him somewhere safe and warm, clean/soak the tank in bleach water. Rinse, let everything dry... Soak William and put some mite spray on him, spray the dried stuff and put it all back with some new aspen chips.

Does that sound ok? Did I forget anything? This is my very first snake mite encounter.

Bummer!

I'm sorry to hear about your mite problem. Mites are really a pain!!!!

Your plan sounds OK, but probably not enough to get rid of them completely: I've had a few encounters with mites and read everything I could find on how to get rid of the monsters.
Here's an article I put together for HC with a plan of attack that has worked for me.

Good luck!

Right. I'll start soaking the poor fellow tonight. He's gonna hate me for this. I'm off to start the process! Thanks for the help!.

And until you are positive that they are all gone use paper for a substrate and keep the tank bare except for water bowl and hide. If you miss even one it starts all over again.

i have also had them a few times with new animals try NIX the cream rinse that you get at the drug store for head lice and mix it with hot water and mix it well let it cool down and spray everything down well including any and all surface around the reptiles Yes I spray the reptiles as well take out all substrate and keep them on paper only for the next few weeks easier to see if they come back repeat everything in three days and dont keep a water dish in with them after I know I have them beat I put the snakes in a small tub with room temp water for a few min while set ther tanks back up .PS I put all substrate in the micowave for 1 min to kill off everything that could be hiding in it better to be safe than sorry miss one little bugger and you will have to do it all over again
I find it useful to place a small peice of corragated cardboard in the bottom of the enclosure that I throw in the garbage about 1 hour after the lights come on in the morning. As mites hate light and move off the snakes for the darkest place they can find.Hope this helps, good luck on your battle.
