A? B? Ghost? Something else? Pics!
This quote is from the other A or B thread but since I'm posting some pictures I thought maybe I should start a new one.
Quote:
Then he said something interesting, that I haven't heard of before...he said,"Looking at him, I'd almost call him an xanthated brown". Is "xanthated" (or maybe it's "exanthated" because that's how he pronounced it) a real word? Did I hear him wrong? What does it mean? As far as brown goes, Spectre's always had a brownish cast. As he's been growing, I feel like he's been getting browner in general, with the lighter brownish patches on his neck now tending toward a yellowish hue of brown. Is there such a thing as xanthated brown or exanthated? If so, what does it mean? We thought he was a type B anerythristic charcoal for sure for a while, but with the changes he's been making, I don't know anymore. Another change in Spectre is that when we got him in mid-July, his pattern was pretty solid. Now, as he's growing, some of his once-dark blotches are starting to fade out some in the middle to a shade that matches his lightest parts...kind of like the knees fade on a worn pair of jeans. A hint of Ghost maybe? Do Ghosts have any yellowish color on them at all? Do you think Spectre's pattern might continue to fade? I've posted pics before the forum went kaput, but here are some that are better anyway both because they're more recent and because our new camera is WAY better than the other one was. The pics are smaller than I wanted...for some reason the site won't let me upload the same size pics I've done before. If you want me to show you larger pics, just let me know and I can send you some. Thank you for your help! |

I'll have to try photobucket tomorrow. It says you can only register between 10 and 2.
I thought this site wasn't allowing photos of the size I've uploaded before. I wonder why..... ![]() |

Mr Jingles is a type A.. Smallgrayfox, I would say that Spectre is a type B after all. I will see what Joe's opinion is later on, but as you say he has that distinct faded pinkish-brown hue all over his body, indicative of type B/charcoal.. type As, as babies, are a very pronounced black and white - as they get older their white often becomes an off-white/grey-ish colour.
Very beautiful snake! Shame about the shop owner.. does anyone out there own a legitimate business where they actually have the correct knowledge about the animals they sell?!?!? ![]()

I agree Rachel. I think it's time one of us Mods does a writeup on the different characteristics of type A's and B corns as we seem to get these qustions alot. I'll give it a shot as I know Rachel is busy doing a great paper on the Eastern Collared Lizard that I'm patiently waiting for ****HINT HINT****

Hi, from the first photo it looks like a type A but the last two it could be a type B. I will wait for the pic from photobucket to be postedbefore I will commit.

Would it be possible to get a shot of it on your hand etc for a size referance? Which ever it turns out to be that is a great looking snake. ![]()

Photobucket pics
Bitis Gabonica,
Yes, Spectre has that pinkish-brown hue all over and it's becoming more pronounced as he grows. He's never had any white at all...the closest to white is a silvery-gray. If I use the camera with the flash, it washes the lightest gray out so that he appears white in places, but it's an illusion. He really has nothing on him anywhere that I would say is white. Gray, brown, pinkish-brown, silvery-gray...all those colors are there, but no super-true black and no white. Ok, let me see if I can do this right. Hopefully these pictures will be better than the teeny tiny ones I posted yesterday. Joe, the only thing I can offer by way of size reference at the moment is the last picture where Spectre's curled up inside his cardboard tube from a roll of aluminum foil. Also, the Exo-Terra thermometer behind Spectre in one of the pictures is about two inches in diameter. He just ate again last night, and I don't want to disturb his digestion by taking him out for a picture. He's right about 19 inches long now. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thank you for your help and the compliments to Spectre! ![]() |
