Jem goes off hunger strike! :)

Jem was on a hunger strike for the longest time. Refusing to eat a baby rat for about 7 weeks. Well I caved in and got her a mouse...she ate that so fast, I really doubt that she tasted it! After that, she refused baby rats for 4 weeks in a row again! Talk about a stubborn corn!! Finally last night she ate a baby rat!! Boy, she sure was HUNGRY! I just hope she keeps on eating rats for me because I really hate the thought of breeding mice! YUK, they stink to high heaven! And the closest place I can get mice is a place the WE call "The Mite Factory" and I'll NEVER step foot into that place again! I've gotten mites 3 times from that dump now and you don't even have to BUY anything...just walk in and the mites go home with you on your shoes and stuff!

Thats great news gem!! I know prlonged hunger strikes can cause a lot of worry for keepers especially when its uncharacteristic of that animal.
To comment on your "Mite Factory" there's a place like that here in chicago you can call your local health department and report them, unfortunatley they usually dont do anything but it cant hurt to try. My advice to you would be to try to train your Jem on frozen mice then you could order via the net (rodentpro.com is great I hear) and keep a few dozen at a time.

my rosy boa went without food for 4 months during the winter and it drove me absolutely crazy! but finally when the weather warmed up a little he started eating again. i've only had him since august and he had never done that before so I was worried until he started eating again. they sure like to make you crazy with worry.

Deltro- I already called about that place but I never heard anything back yet, so I' not sure if they did anything about it or not. I'm not about to walk in there to find out either Jem is the only snake I have that eats mice (when she's too stubborn to eat a rat) so It really wouldn't pay for me to oder THAT many mice for just the one snake.... I'm just so glad she finally ate!
