Well, the "hibernation" period for reptiles isn't the same as it is for mammels.. in reptiles it is referred to as brumation, where reptiles stop eating, becoming less active (due to cooler periods) and sleep more, although unlike in hibernation they do not sleep all the time, and still may come out to drink.
We brumated some of our reptiles this year, including our corns - the cooler period is supposed to be linked to increased fertility, although not essential, and also it's a break for us as owners! Since you specifically asked about corn snakes i'll talk about them: We brumated our 5 adult corns - we stopped feeding for two weeks, to ensure that their guts were empty of all food. After this time we cooled them to around 60f, although the temp sometimes dropped to 50-55f and occasionally went up to 70f, depending on room temp and outside weather changes,. We didn't disturb them, except for a quick check once a week to make sure they were all ok, and left them in brumation for around 8 weeks/2 months. After this time we warmed them back up to room temp (70f) for a week, then put them back up to their normal temps, and a week later resumed feeding as normal. We put the male in with the females after the females had post-ovulation sheds, and they all mated - now separated having all just laid eggs. We didn't brumate our two younger corns (2yrs old), however as you may have seen on my thread they mated accidently and produced some fertile eggs.

The main reason most brumate their snakes is preparatory to breeding. Some will not go into breeding cycle without it. Some, such as corns, may breed without it but the sperm count in males may be lower. The other reason is from people with large collections. It saves money since they don't feed then and it is a "vacation" since they don't have to clean cages. However brumation can be a dangerous time. If the snake isn't in peak condition it may not survive it.
I have never brumated my colubrids.

Yeah, thanks Merlin, should have said that - snakes must be in optimum condition before brumation takes place, and it can be a dangerous time, so it shouldn't be practiced half-heartedly.

So it wont shorten their lifes if I don't brumate my snakes? I'd rather don't do it,even a lot of people recommend it,but I know that it's tricky. Some even have their snakes in the fridge or in the cellar!
But I heard that it's healthy for them! |

I wouldn't dream of brumating mine...I'd be a useless bundle of nerves the whole time!
I'm too much of a worrier to go through that. If I ever try to breed mine, they'll have to do it without a period of brumation...if they don't want to breed, that's ok too. I don't want to risk losing the snakes I have trying to make babies. ![]()
