Pictures: Sexing Spectre?
Here are some pictures of Spectre's tail, which is approximately 5 inches (12.7 centimeters) from vent to tail tip right now (sorry it's so many, but I wanted to get a bunch since I wasn't sure which view is needed to hazard a guess at Spectre's gender):
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's a picture of him next to a 12 inch ruler...we measured him with a tape measure and got roughly 32 inches (81.28 centimeters), but we couldn't get him to straighten out completely, so it's not exact. ![]()

Juliane, this might sound stupid (probably is) but snake folks always complain about measuring their pets. Every one tries with a straight, inflexible object and I never understood why since it's the most unnatural position for a snake.
I know that putting them in transparent tubes is stressful for the snake, but can't you use a string? You hold the end in the snake's head and gently slide your other hand down (around the snake's body and string) and hold, repeat the process with the other hand and repeat until you reach the end. Then measure the string and you'll know the total length!

I tried a string, but he wouldn't cooperate with that either...he kept jerking himself away from it and letting it slip.
After much maneuvering though, I got an approximate measure of just over 31 inches...pretty close to what I got yesterday. I also downloaded the snake measure program, and it gave me just over 31 inches for him too. ![]()

Thank you for your input, DM!
![]() My daughter, husband, and I think he looks like a male too...I read that "The hemipenes make the tails of males longer and thicker than the tails of females of the same size. When looked at from the side, male tails are generally half as thick at the middle as at the base. Female tails are usually half as thick a quarter of the tail's length from the base." ...from that description, I think that Spectre's tail follows the male form. More opinions are certainly welcome! ![]()

thats exactly what I was thinking about it too!
it especially makes sense when you look at the 4th pic down where his tail is held out at a sideways view. i love the pic where he's looking at his own tail. so cute.

I would hazard a guess at male. However I have never had much faith in that matter of sexing. If you really want to know for sure you need to have the snake probed.

Thanks for the guess, Merlin!
I read your reply to Maggie (I agree that the only way to know for sure is to get Spectre probed), but her response to the idea of probing was her usual one - Maybe one day she'll decide she has to know for some reason, but until then we're very interested in people's opinions of guessing visually, even though we know it isn't foolproof. Thank you again! ![]()
