The Separation of Jack and Sally

Ok...after the talk and the pictures of one corn chowing down on another, I couldn't stand the worry anymore, so I've put Sally in the little 10 gallon, and I gave Jack custody of the 20 long since he was there first (we'll get Sally a 20 long sometime...she's still plenty small enough for the 10 for right now)...there is no longer any danger of anyone eating anyone else. An added bonus: I'll know whose poo is whose, and if there's a regurge, I don't have to wonder who did it.

Would someone please tell the obnoxious little voice in my head that Sally and Jack won't be sad and miss each other now that they're no longer living together?

The only place I have right now to put Sally's enclosure is right next to Ky-Lin's, and I realized right away that I'd need to put a solid barrier between them. Ky-Lin saw Sally's movements through the glass and was VERY interested. Ky-Lin looked like she'd eat Sally in a heartbeat if she could get through two layers of glass! I don't want anyone stressing, so the view is blocked now.

*sigh* Somehow, moving Sally has made me feel melancholy

Rest easy,,,Sally and Jack will not miss each other. They've probably forgotten each other within 5 minutes of being seperated.

Hi Julianne
For your own peace of mind, I'm sure you did the right thing separating them...even though I think cannabalism is rare, you'll definitely feel more relaxed and be able to monitor them better now.
I seriously doubt they'll miss each other. I don't think a snake's brain is developed enough to reflect on thoughts and feelings. I know I tend to project a lot of my feelings onto my snakes... and then have to remind myself that it has more to do with me than them. (I had the same thoughts when I quarantined Q again!) As long as they have nice hide boxes, I think they will feel secure and comfortable in their new homes.
And you can feel better knowing that you can offer them more specialized and monitored care.
Try not to let it get you down. I think you did the right thing!

Seperation

It sounds like it will be best for them and for you. Its a win win situation, its much easier to know what your snake dose when it is alone (such as eat and poo).

Juliane those snakes will be jujst fine! They couldn't care less whether the other is gone. As Ken stated 5 minutes later they probably forgot the other was ever around.

Snakes in nature happen to meet each other and do one of 3 things

1 Ignore each other
2 try to eat eat other
3 Breed (or 2 males wrestle for breeding rights)

and then they go on about their own business.
Snakes are not social animals no matter how much WE try to place our emotional tendencies on THEM.
They just aren't wired that way.
relax,...you're still a good snake mommy!

Thank you for the reassurance I think you're right...Sally seems just fine, and she did some exploring in her new habitat, which I hope will get better after I get to the pet store. Her cool side hide at the moment is a light bulb box because that's all I have for it...but guess where she ended up after her explorations...in the light bulb box, so I guess she doesn't mind "shabby chic" accomodations

Considering some of the places I have found snakes holed up in out in the woods that light bulb box was "The Hilton"!

It helped a lot, Marsha, thank you! It was just what I needed to keep my husband from protesting too much about having another enclosure in the house.

you did the right thing. i'm sure they will be much better off so you can monitor their health seperately and not wonder who's doing what. now they can continue to grow into beautiful snakes.
