The Escape Artist

With a broken heart and teary eyes I have to post the following.

Because of apartment issues, my fiance's mother has had to take care of our Candy Cane Corn, named Valentine. She has had to take care of snakes before, so I wasn't -too- worried.

Well, I got a call that he had escaped from his tank. He is not a full adult. He is about a foot long at most. He is still a baby.

He was looked for EVERYWHERE. Now, unfortunately; she rescues so there are MANY cats and dogs in the house and on the property.

Does anyone have any tips on where my little pink Valentine could be hiding? I read that appliances that get warm should be checked and to look for shed skins. But the door is often left open, and I would not be surprised if he could have slithered outside. Do Corns survive well outside on their own?

I am very depressed about this. And while it saddens me that I may never be able to hold and cuddle Valentine again, what are the odds of his survival?

At this point, he has been missing about three weeks. No signs of skin or horrid smells. And I'm finally coming to terms that my little guy will probably never be seen again.

Does anyone have any tips? Suggestions? How to set traps?

You would be surprised on where he could hide. You need to look in places you would never suspect. I too would be worried with all of the dogs and cats. Best of luck

Re: The Escape Artist

Appliances are the first place to look. Refrigerator, freezer, lights/lamps, heaters ext, ext. But they can hide ANYWHERE! I had a childrens python the size of a pencil escape, and it was gone 40 days+. We found it on the 4th shelf of our VCR tape collection! GOOD LUCK, I hope you find Valentine.

Re: The Escape Artist

Have you tried setting a "trap". I have heard of people doing this with success, although it didnt work for me. We got lucky and just found our missing snake while we were moving things around.

Lower the ambient room temperature significantly, and set out a heat lamp or two over a hide, or tank on its side, in different areas you think the snake may be. The idea is the snake NEEDS to be warm, and can see heat. If hes around, and the room is cold enough the snake should travel to the heat lamp and go into the hide to feel safe/secure/warm.

GOOD LUCK, I hope you find Valentine.

Re: The Escape Artist

The best idea I can give you is to create a hot spot. Generally the snakes that escape do not leave their immediate area for a fair amount of time, so seal off the room and make a hot spot with a hide and some food

Re: The Escape Artist

Good luck. We thought our baby corn, Jackie, had escaped. Couldn't find him anywhere. I bought Babe, a ball python to replace him. While I was prepping the habitat I discovered a small lip on the underside of the water bowl. The corn had crawled in there and was just under the lip. Now we've got both. A very happy ending.
