Finally!

I picked up my new corn today. I got a really great deal from someone on craigslist. She's two years old and is either a sunglow or amelanistic (she has red eyes and no white on her back, but she has a white belly so I'm not sure). She's about four feet long. She came with a 65 gallon screen reptarium, and I haven't decided whether I like it or not. It's really huge with more sky space than floor space so I may switch to like a 29 long. I also have a question about heat placement. She came with a sun lamp, a heat emitter, an under tank heating pad, and a heat rock. This kind of seems like overkill to me, especially since, in order to have a temp gradient I have to put most of it on one side of the cage. Then again, it is a screen cage so, maybe it's all necessary and I don't know it. All of the heating except the heat rock is on a thermostat though, so what do you guys think?

Re: Finally!

Wow a very purdy snake. I would throw out that heat rock or cut the cord and use it for decoration. They are snake bakers!
Is the cage one of those all screen cages?? If it is thats why you have all the heat sources those would be hard to get the right temp, ect.
I havent had a corn snake for like 15 years so I am sure others will chime in here.
Congrats!

Re: Finally!

I agree, ditch the heat rock!
I would also advise using something other than the reptarium.
Snakes are very good at locating the area where the zipper ends and pushing their way out and escaping.

Re: Finally!

Yeah, that's what I thought too, but the guy said he's had this snake in the reptarium for over a year with no problem so I thought I would ask. The thermometers I have on either side of the cage say that on one side it's 88 and the other side is 80.

Re: Finally!

you also have to remember that just because someone had the snake in something for that long with no problems doesn't mean that there never would have been a problem. you want to make sure the snake is secured as best as possible in the best possible enclosure. once a snake gets out it can be very hard to find again.

Re: Finally!

Indeed. The snake may just not have found that "spot" yet. But once it does, it will push and wiggle till it gets out.
Not a pleasant situation.
Also what type of thermometer are you using?
If it is the dial type or the stick on tape, they are terrible about being inaccurate.

Re: Finally!

It's a digital one with a wand and it also has a thermostat with a little wand.
