New Corn!!

ok well i've been wanting to get a new snake for a while. and I was at 1st planning on a corn but changed my mind to a BP. but yesterday I was at petco (not the best place to get any herps really I know) in NH and I was with my father and we happened to look at the corns and most of them were anery but there was this one albino and it looked so weird; the sides were like candy caned almost, but her/his head and the top for about 1/3 down the body is orange with very faint saddles, the the rest of the top is almost like a snow corn but with a little bit of orange. and she/he was extemely friendly even after I brought him/her home and had to wash her (because she relieved herself and crawled threw it) and she was freaking out calmed down right away once picked up. but I ended up getting him/her and I don't know like if its a certain kind of albino or just a really odd corn. i'll get some pictures soon but i'm trying to let him/her settle down. but if anyone knows i'd really help. also I heard to can tell the gender of a young albino, snow, or blizzard but putting a flash light up to it's tail, i'd like to know if theres any truth to this thank you.

Re: New Corn!!

Ive never heard the flashlight trick, would be interesting if it worked. There are some many crossbreeds out there its hard to say what the morph might be, especially not know the background. Some pics would help give a good guess when s/he settles.

ya, i've been searching the web looking for something that looks similar but right now the only thing I could possibly see is s/he being a cross between some different albino lines or something. then again though shes still little, like maybe 13" give or take a little, so its going to be hard to tell until she gets a little older I guess.

Re: New Corn!!

A flashlight works good on Albinos, Blizzards and snows fairly well as long as their young. You can see the shadow of the herpeins if it's there.

Re: New Corn!!

well I got some pictures, they're a little blurry but you can see the colors.

this is a picture of his/her enclosure, thought I might as well put this up to. its a 5gallon, i know small but s/hes still very small and I have the temps right and everything. also the tempature sticker thing in the back I don't use that, i use one of those laser tempature guns things lol, i just can't get the sticker off the back so its stuck there lol.

Re: New Corn!!

she/he is very pretty. it would be great to see how she/he changes as it gets older.

it is possible to up the size of the tank to a 10 gallon for now and still have her feel secure, you would just be adding another hide or two. it'll probably be easier to maintain proper heating in something a little bigger than a 5. both of my corn babies started out in 15 gallons with multiple hides in each.

don't be surprised if one day you find s/he is laying along the lip at the top of the tank where the lid connects, one of my babies did that for the longest time until he got too big to do it. just make sure it can't get out!

good luck

thanks, the only reason shes in a 5 is because I thought I had another 10gallon but I forgot my brother had his pet mice in there, they'll pay for it in the future lol just kidding, so i'm just going to wait until she gets a little bigger and get her something bigger for her or maybe when I go to the store later with my father to get her some f/t pinkies i'll get something bigger.

Re: New Corn!!

lol the mice will never know whats coming

when you buy the pinkies make sure you give your baby at least a week to settle in before you feed. feeding too soon in a new environment can cause a regurge and thats nasty business. for a young snake like that it could take alot out of it and stress it out more.

good job though on getting frozen/thawed. they are so much easier to keep around and with most frozen feeders you can buy in bulk and save money in the long run because you're not constantly running out to get food. plus once you step it up to frozen mice it is alot safer for your snake than feeding live. i'm glad you decided on frozen thawed. i had started my snakes out on live then prekilled and finally frozen when I was too tired of going out every week for food. i was amazed at how easily they switched over and it is so much easier.

also be sure to feed in a separate container when it comes time for you to feed.

Re: New Corn!!

ya I had a few snakes a while ago but ended up having to get rid of them but now i'm starting again with a new baby corn. i had my other snakes one live 1st but them ended up switching to f/t, but I fed them in there enclosure so when ever I opened it they were all like FOOD! so that was a real pain lol. so now I have a critter ceeper or what ever they're called and i'm going to try feed him/her in there. right now my main concern is trying to find a name, i'm going to fine the gender out 1st though using that flash light trick.
