Corn Snake Questions

I replaced my tank's sand to Aspen,
I think my snake Jasmine is happier.
She laid eggs two days ago (like 15)
I know there unfertile, I didn't have a male.

Do female snakes lay eggs even when thier not pregnant?
Do they ovulate or something?

I just got a male yesterday (the day after she laid eggs)
And I'm pretty sure they mated (tails connected and everything or awhile)
But the male corn snake is pretty young,
Will she get pregnant? She just laid eggs.

How old do snakes have to be to reproduce?
(The male is maybe a foot long almost a an inch thick)
But my female is bigger and longer (she's like 6 years old)

My baby Jasmine hasen't eaten or drank water yet,
i'll try again today, and she still is puffing out her throut
sometimes like a frog, Does impaction cause that?

Nevertheless, if she does not eat by tomarrow or
the next day I'm taking her to the vet.. Any advice?

Re: Corn Snake Questions

I dont know anything about reproducing snakes. Someone else should chime in here about that. But did you quarrantine your male before introducing it to the female?? You wouldnt want them to transmit anything to each other...

Re: Corn Snake Questions

I'm pretty sure that snakes don't produce eggs unless they have mated. Has she been with a male before she layed?

And yeah, corn snakes don't need to be on sand, aspen is wayyyy better.

You introduced them too early.

I can't help you with impaction.

How long have you had Jasmine? What are you feeding her? When's the last time she ate?

Re: Corn Snake Questions

Well I don't think my snake is sick,
she just might have some internal thing that can probably
be treated with antibiotics,
I'll have to check with a vet,
but I don't think the male will get sick too unless he starts
getting sand or bits of stuff in his mouth. My snake had sand in her mouth,
So I replaced the sand with Aspen that should prevent that.
But what I can't figure out is why my snake puffs her throut
out sometimes like a frog.
It looks wierd.. and don'y know why she's doing it.

Re: Corn Snake Questions

Jasmine lived with a male snake about 5 years ago (Christopher) until he died.
She hasen't been with another snake since then, (except 2 days ago)

Oh yeah, sand is gross, aspen is better.

I didn't know they would mate,
the male is young, didn't think he even knew how to mate.
My male snake I had along time ago (Christopher) and Jasmine always lived together.
They mated and Jasmine layed eggs but she was too young to make babies.

I've had Jasmine for about 8 or 9 years now,
She eats adult mice, the last time she ate was about 3 or more weeks ago.
She shed her skin about 2 weeks ago
and didn't eat, then two days ago she laid eggs,
so I'm guessing she didn't eat because she had eggs inside her
and the time before that because she shed.
She really should be hungrey now,
I'll try to feed her today and if she doesen't eat today or tomarrow,
I'll take her to the vet ASAP!

Re: Corn Snake Questions

ah well, im not really sure about the pregnancy of cornsnakes. with boas, they swell during ovulation, then shrink back down, then have a post ovulation shed, then they are truly gravid and begin to grow babies.
i wish I could help you more. here is a cornsnake forum, and I'm sure they can help you there.

Re: Corn Snake Questions

The normal breeding behavor of corns is.
-post OV shed
-Egg devolopment 4-8 weeks
-Prelay shed/stool
-Laying of the eggs

5 years is a long time to store sperm for a corn but like most snakes they will not lay without being mated. Though over the last two years I heard of a pair cases were females laid without ever being with a male it doesn't happen often and the young normally don't all make it or have high levels of genetic problems. The last one I heard of was a silverqueen female some of the young lived and have silght coloration diffrences but no major problems. So you may want to incubate the eggs but I wouldn't put too much hope in them.
