Okay, So I've Decided on a Sunglow

I'm so excited! I've decided to get a Motley Sunglow. Now I have some questions. I've read that these snakes live in a more temperate than tropical climate. Will it hurt my snake if it is too humid in his tank? The reason I ask is that I want to use some live plants and mosses and I know watering them in addition to having a thick substrate (to hide the plant pots) will increase the humidity quite a bit. Thanks!

if you have a screen top, I wouldn't worry too much about humidity. Most humidity I can keep in a tank with a screen top is 40% and that's with heavy misting. As long as you have an area he can get off the moist substrate, I think you will be OK.

Why hide the pots though? I would get pretty ones and make them part of the setup

Cornsnakes required very low humidity unless they are shedding. Best thing to do would be to add a hydrometer into the tank to monitor it and adjust it as necessary. I agree with Liz,,make pretty pots then you can also take the plants out to water them

And get ready to replace the plants every so often. The snake is going to crawl all over them. It won't be a problem as a hatchling but as he gets bigger he will break them.

Re: Okay, So I've Decided on a Sunglow

Good choice, I really wouldn't worry too much about humidity normal household humidity is 50-60% and is perfect for corns misting now and again won't hurt but you wouldn't want a constant 75% or more.

When getting your Sunglow make sure you get it from a good sorce. The Sunkissed gene that makes sunglows (a line breed) came from Love's okeetees and is a form of hypo. Some breeders have been known to sell normal hypo okeetees as Sunkissed. Though the alles of the Sunkissed and Hypo genes are diffrent.
