Re: New Red Rat Snake

It only takes a minute. I would call them first and ask. Most stores and breeders I have dealt with will do it as a courtesy. However if they have a lot of customers you may have to wait for an opening.

Re: New Red Rat Snake

Hello to all, I recently purchase a mature Everglades Rat Snake named Calusa. While he is beautiful to look at and easy to handle/docile, he really smells the place up. I have 4 other snakes, redtail boa, Brazilin rainbow boa, Ball, and a jungle carpet. The other 4 together do not really produce much of an odor at all, but the Everglade Rat really reaks. Is this common?
Is there a solution to this odor. I clean the cage ever day, but Calusa seems to deficate daily and thus the ordor is back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: New Red Rat Snake

Hmmm, i know my 2 corn snakes have the only stenchy cage but thats only if I dont clean it for a good while. Just make sure it has a place to saok and try using paper towels or newspaper for the bedding just tape it down so he can`t get under it and change it out weekly or more often. It could just be your mulch or bedding have build up humidity paired with body excretions, And always make sure to get there shed right out,That can be the worst smell

Re: New Red Rat Snake

Hello yzfracer347! I didn't mean to distract from your thread. I just thought that asking my question in a group of people interested and owning rat snakes might ne a great way to get to an answer quicker. And thank you for your response. Currently Calusa (named after the Calusa Indians who inhabited the souther half of Florida from 10,000 years BC till wipe out by smallpox in 1579, by a spanish conquest) is on newspaper, which is changes daily, as well as the tank being disinfected daily, he just deficates every day. I would rather he go all at once, once a week, as per his eating schedule.
He's real beautiful, but my wife is threatening, because it smells up the entire house.
I'm just looking for a solution. If someone would like to exchange emails about this topic, my email address is TheEDIman@aol.com. I apoligze for disrupting you thread.

Thank you.
