you would be surprised the number of species that use this defence. Even in continents other than the americas that have no rattle snakes that the idea of mimiking it is based on. My tree vipers used to even do it...from asia

but yeah all of the elaphe and lampropeltis do the tail vibration thingy. Other snakes also use their tail vibration for luring in prey especially youngsters. My bitis caudalis used to do it all the time to lure in geckos. I think young copperheads do the same(i am sure I read that somewhere before, to tired to research tonight lol). Anyone know of any boids vibriting their tails? that would interest me...i have never heard of it

NOt that I have ever seen or heard of. I think that most boids are probably too lethargic to work up that much energy!

I love it when corns and ratsnakes vibrate their tails like that. It's very convincing! I had a friend who was 100% positive he had a rattlesnake on his porch, but when I went over to see, it was most definitely a ratsnake...He was so convincing though I've always remembered him as the "RAT"tlesnake.

I had the same situation with the bullsnake (I caught it and took it home, surprise surprise! )
Now most of you have heard that my mother was deathly afraid of snakes anyway. I have terrified the poor woman from the time I could walk!
I had put the bull snake out in the garage in a spare cage,without notifying my mother. The poor unsuspecting woman went out to do some laundry and this wild 6ft bullsnake was coiled up, beating his tail on the ground, rearing up, and hissing and striking at her.
The first thought through her mind was that her snake crazy kid had brought home a diamond back rattler!
I knew exactly when she found the snake!
I heard her yelling for me over a block away.
