First Frozen Thawed
i'm feeling pretty good right now. Blizzard and Bullet both took their first frozen thawed mice tonight. i've always given them prekilled so I wasn't sure if they would take to this but the petstore I work at will be closing because the owner is retiring and I don't trust the other petstore in the area that carries mice. a fellow coworker said she's gotten a few mice from there before and ended up with mites. i may have to find a place to order frozen. so I froze some when I went in today and took them home with me at the end of the night. i thawed them out until they were mushy in the middle and since i've never done it before, hopefully they were warm enough. they felt that way to me and I didn't feel any cold spots inside. i've had both of my snakes since they were little strings with eyes so in the two and a half years i've had Bullet he's never had a frozen thawed and in the five years i've had Blizzard he's never had one either but they both took to them very well so i'm hoping they were warm enough. i guess we'll see what happens but as of right now i'm pretty happy.
my only concern is that my Rosy boa Chaos may not take as easily but he's off food for the winter right now so I guess i'll have to try later on. he can be picky sometimes.

Congratulations!!! What a big step: but it'll save you a lot of stress and hassles in the long run... and money! Frozen food is usually cheaper -- it is over here anyway.
If you're really concerned about the temp, you can get a laser temperature gun (www.tempgun.com is where I ordered mine.) Or you can just put the thawed mice in hot water for 5-10 minutes just before feeding. Ours eat the food wet, but you can also pat them dry or use a hairdryer. Some people put them under heat lamps. Congrats again!! |

I will be facing the same challenge really soon myself. The common we adopted (who was/is sick) has never eaten f/t. I have tried on a couple different times and she wouldn't even look at them. But she still has some stuff in her nose (you can still hear what sounds like a stuffed up head) she is half way through her 20 shots of antibiotics. I'm going to wait a bit longer and try again. I know they can go months without feeding and that could also be the problem. Oh well what can I say, a new experience every day.

i thawed them out in a bag first then just to be safe I changed the water and put new water in and put them directly in that for a while. at first I thought they'd like them dry better so I was a little worried when I gave it to them right out of the water but they didn't care either way lol. and there were no regurges today so hopefully there will be no problems.

congrats and if you live in canada www.canadianfeeders.com is where I get mine and they're always of great quality. I would say its healthier to give them fresh killed though.

all three of my snakes are used to eating freshly killed mice but since my rosy is off food for the winter right now i'm not sure what he will think about frozen thawed. i personally would rather keep feeding them all freshly killed mice but the store I work at will be closing around january/february and I would rather find somewhere to get them frozen then to buy live ones from places I don't trust. so one of the only options would be to introduce frozen thawed to them. oh well. i guess we'll see what happens.
its a bummer because I only need like 3 mice a week.
