I have no experience with rheostats but I use the Reptitemp 500R Thermostat as well as the ESU Reptile Temperature controller. Both work very simply, you just plug the heater into the thermostat and the thermostat into the wall outlet. Both have a remote probe that you put in the tanks to register the temperatures. Once you get it set it maintains a constant temperature by shutting power to the heater on and off.
You can find either one online for about $30.

I am very excited! I was at the pet store today, to get clamps to hold the screen top securely on the tank, and I looked at the fancy "driftwood" climbing thingies for reptiles. Then I looked at the prices -- $12-$18! For sticks! Since we live in the woods, my common sense took over and I did not make that purchase.
So I got home and went out and found a really cool, gnarled piece of (dead but not rotted) tree root that was growing across our creek. I took my pruning saw to it and cut a wonderful length to go in the tank (I did sterilize it by baking it in the oven). Only problem was I managed to also saw my own toe! It's just a flesh wound (but a pretty deep one -- we decided stitches were unnecessary, but just barely). But I have officially shed blood for my snake, even before he arrived! LOL -- I stayed out there to finish cutting the root before going in for first aid. I'm too stubborn for my own good.
I think I have the rheostat working (maybe -- I got the temp up, now I have to bring it down a bit), but if not, I'll go the thermostat route. Thanks for the recommendations, Merlin.

Don't get me wrong! Rheos are fine and many people use them. The reason I like the thermostats is that once they are set,.. they are set. With a rheo you have to fiddle with them anytime the room temperature changes.

The rheostat was just the easiest thing I could get my hands on before the snake arrives. I would have preferred a thermostat, I think. If it's a pain the way I have it, though, I'll be happy to make a change.

Nice set up, just one thing you might want to bare in mind corns do better with a slightly lower warm side temp so you might want to bring that down to around the 80 to 85 mark rather than the 89 to 90 mark. The shreded newspaper will def be a big hit my little one loves having sheded paper towel to hide and bury self in.

Amy, the reho with the light works this way or what ive came to find out. The dimmer the light the more power, the brighter the light less power or off. If you have the reho in a handybox or wall box, there is a thing that says this way up on the reho. if you have it that way and move the dial to where the line on it is facing left and cant move any more that way its off, oppisote of that is on. If you cant figure it out, ill take some pics of mine
The heat may you have for your Leopard Geckos is a cobra heat mat, great heaters. Ive only found one at petsmart, and snaged it for a friend
